A Writer's Life

From birth, I knew that I wanted to be a writer. I loved the sure and sturdy feel of a number-two lead pencil from its bold, pointed tip on one end to the forgiving eraser on the other. I loved the smell of a new and pristine notebook, the flow of ink from a fountain pen, the silky clean feel of a blank piece of paper beneath my hand.

To me, an empty page signifies potential, freedom, and an outlet for all of the thoughts that occupy my mind.

This page is dedicated to the reluctant writer in all of us. My hope is that it will appeal to that creative, expressive, and, yes, frightened side of our personalities. It is for the part of us that longs to do something artistic – and for the part of us that is afraid we are not good enough to even try.

The purpose of this page is to support, nurture, and coax that passionate piece of ourselves to the surface – to give ourselves permission to write freely,

without the threat of a summons from the grammar, spelling, and punctuation police.

I will post a new essay each month on this page and I have no idea what the topic will be. All I know is that it will be deliberately imperfect so that you can see that every idea starts out a little rough around the edges, but that with devotion, passion, and practice it sometimes develops into something meaningful. Think of this page as a place where the embryo of an artistic idea is implanted on the page. From that point on, a thought can develop into an essay, a short story, or a book.

That is how The Writer’s Life begins.
